To start with, the CE marking logo must consist of the initials "CE", and both letters should have the same vertical dimension and be at least 5mm in height unless otherwise stated in the relevant EU directives and regulations. If the CE marking symbol is enlarged or reduced, the proportions of the two letters must be respected. As long as the initials stay visible, the logo can take different forms (e.g. colour, hollow or solid).

If it is not possible to attach the CE marking symbol to the product in a visible, legible and indelible way, the symbol must be displayed on the packaging and/or in any complementary documentation. However, the manufacturer must be able to justify the different location of the symbol with one of the following reasons:

  • specific technical conditions don't allow for it
  • the minimum dimensions of the logo cannot be respected
  • the visible, legible and indelible condition of the CE marking cannot be guaranteed
  • certain factors make it impossible to affix the logo on the product's surface (e.g. the explosive nature of the product).

Lastly, and most importantly, before affixing the CE marking on products, the manufacturer or any other concerned party must ensure that all required conformity assessment procedures have been completed successfully. By law, it's prohibited to affix the CE marking symbol on non-compliant products.
